Ibero-America and Carabanchel. Dialogues from the design

The Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID) will celebrate its tenth edition in November of next year (BID26), consolidating itself as a meeting point for design professionals from all over Ibero-America.

In this context, the project “Ibero-America and Carabanchel. Dialogues from the design”, promoted by DIMAD, with the support of the Madrid City Council and District 11, is proposed as a far-reaching territorial initiative that connects the international dimension of the IDB with the local reality of the Carabanchel district, one of the most active centers of creation and production in Madrid.

Its objective is to establish bridges of material and conceptual exchange between the outstanding Ibero-American designs of previous editions of the IDB and the contemporary practices of the Carabanchel studios, recognizing the plurality of approaches, materials and scales that characterize his creative scene.

A project with a dual vocation:

International → activate a dialogue with designs from previous editions of the IDB through specific actions.

Local → make visible and cohesive the design fabric of Carabanchel, encouraging the exchange between studios, spaces and audiences.

To this end, about twenty studios have been invited to establish a direct dialogue with an object or project from one of the previous editions of the IDB, shaping unique relationships between contemporary Carabanchel practices and Ibero-American designs highlighted at the Biennial. The purpose is to generate a creative, critical or poetic response that expands or re-contextualizes the meaning of the original object based on the current practice of each study. These dialogues can be developed in multiple ways, depending on the nature and focus of each study.

The expected result is a map of real connections between works, contexts and agents, which serves as a model of collaboration between the global and the local. To this end, open and participatory processes will be developed, inviting citizens and other cultural agents to learn about design processes through open days.

During the different stages, open days, workshops and colloquiums will be held as part of the extended ecosystem, and in November 2026, the conclusions and projects will be formally exhibited.

November 2025: Presentation at the Design Center, Matadero Madrid, of the participating studies and the first approaches to this dialogue.

March 2026: Through open days, presentations and activities in Carabanchel, both the advances and the reflections derived from the work to date will be shared.

November 2026: The expectation is that the final results can form part of the general programming of BID26 in venues linked to the IDB project, consolidating the bridge between the local scene and the Ibero-American design network.
